if a friend of mine wants to John Join Mastodon, is mastodon.social terrible these days. i know they Should use a small neighbourhood server but like. please answer the question
@hikari it has a very different dynamic to the rest of mastodon, much more akin to twitter, and much more exposed to spam and rando reply guys. whether or not that counts as terrible is down to the individual.

@hikari I only really use my mastodon.social account. I would move to a smaller one if I was really motivated but honestly it is fine, I haven’t had any ongoing issues with spam or anything. Local timeline is useless but Explore has a lot of content and is probably better than on small instances.
@hikari the only issue I've seen is that there's a movement to defederate because it's terrible
outside that, ime it just works, not really anything technically wrong
