jump to expanded postheh, Apple messed up their tech specs pages: the US iPhone 15 has no SIM card tray, yet it's present in the illustration, and the EU iPhone 15 has a SIM card tray, but it's not present in the illustration!

(this is the case at the time of writing, but i'm sure they'll fix it soon enough, so don't @ me when they do)
oh, i have been told this is actually the 5G antenna window??? why would that differ between regions
oh they only have mmWave support on the US model. i see. well that's interesting!
@saagar unironically yes, fuck eSIMs. if i lived in the US and was interested in buying a new iPhone, i'd import
@hikari different antenna to match the bands regionally licensed for 5G operation, most likely.
@gsuberland it's the lack of mmWave apparently
@hikari makes sense. mmWave wouldn't propagate through the metal case very well, so they're probably encasing the antenna in acrylic or PTFE.
there are some transparent glass antenna products for the cellular market, which seem to be marketed as a way to turn the whole glass screen into an antenna, but my understanding is that they're quite expensive right now, and I can see that being a *huge* problem for cracked screens.
