@Suiseiseki Discord's log retention policy sucks but describing it as spyware is sensationalist and incorrect
Why don't we read the privacy policy?; https://web.archive.org/web/20180528052213/https://discordapp.com/privacy
"Data We Collect Automatically: When you interact with us through the Services, we receive and store certain information such as an IP address, device ID, and your activities within the Services." - last time I checked, spyware functionality is required to "receive and store" "activities within the Services"
"Aggregated or Non-identifiable Data: We may also share aggregated or non-personally identifiable information with our partners or others for business purposes." - which is pretty much admitting that they collect information via spying, package it all up (aggregated) and send it to their partners (the shareholders) or they apply so called "anonymization" that can easily be deanonymized.
Rather than being sensationalist, describing it as spyware is conservative (as it's probably malware too) and correct.
@Suiseiseki “spyware” and “malware” imply the software is created with malicious intent, actively collecting data that has no reasonable connection to the use of the services. this is false, and sensationalist. you do yourself no favours in your advocacy by using this terminology. I myself am no fan of Discord's data practices and wish we lived in a world where FLOSS web apps were more popular, but we're not going to get there by shouting scary words at random fediverse users.
I have searched for the unicorn proprietary software that has been authored without malicious intent, but it seems unicorns don't exist?
>actively collecting data that has no reasonable connection to the use of the services
Yes, Discord does that.
>wish we lived in a world where FLOSS web apps were more popular
The very concept of a "web app" needs to be eliminated if we want a semi-sane world, but that's not happening.
>shouting scary words at random fediverse users.
I'm not writing in full caps, so I'm not shouting and the descriptive words I'm using are not what I would call "scary words".
@hikari@social.noyu.me Welcome to 2023.
@hikari @astro Cloudflare can be hilarious 😅 I remember encountering something similar during some work I did for @SocketSecurity, apparently talking about security can be interpreted as a security threat as well
