i jumped on godot already in 2017 because i long ago vowed never again to use proprietary, drm software for my creative projects, after yoyogames abandoned the gamemaker 8 series and shut down the drm servers
i'm not trying to be smug or superior here. refusing to use the best-in-class creative tools because they're proprietary is not easy, it's a difficult and painful decision in all sorts of ways. but if you do make that choice, you're the master of your own destiny, at least.
the thing that happened with game maker 8 was a double whammy:
โข yoyogames shut down the drm servers, so despite me buying the software i could no longer use it without pirating and cracking it
โข yoyogames took the engine in a new direction that radically broke compatibility
i'm not here to relitigate the past, i'm over it at this point, but it sure made an impact on my choice of tools going forward.
