I listened to an illustrative recording of the 50's chord progression but I couldn't hear very well so I unconsciously interpreted the gaps between chords as me failing to hear every other chord and my brain filled in the progression from Pechelbel's Canon in D
it would be interesting to try to create this effect intentionally… find two chord progressions where every chord in one corresponds to every other chord in the other, edit a song using the first progression so there's a gap between each chord, then lie about what the song is
