I figured out how to use the low-pass filter on the Roland SC-7 (the “General MIDI only” little sibling of the SC-55). I can't believe it even has one, let alone a user-accessible one. now I'm gonna be unstoppable
who would win:
- 1997 Microsoft software synth with licensed Roland GS sounds
- 1992 Roland hardware synth with only General MIDI sounds
the answer is: the hardware synth, because it has better sample rate both in the ROM and the output, and effects, and a low-pass filter :3
what the fuck. the Roland SC-7 can sound like this. what the fuck
even the lowest-end rompler can be a subtractive virtual analog synth if you try hard enough,
at every turn i've worried i'll regret my investments in obsolete 90's MIDI gear and it always turns out better than expected. it's a really fun way to make and explore music for me. who needs a proper DAW :3

hey wait there's actually more bass during the trough of the sweep due to some cool filter artifact!!! it's not just my ears, look at this spectrogram… this explains why it sounded so cool :3
note from future self this is called a resonant filter and is why it sounds cool (i figured that out ages ago but i wanna update this anyway)
