that was moxie marlinspike's secret mission. the operators knew they would never extract sms and call fees again without his co-operation. they were willing to trade off the lawful intercept capability,
obviously this is a joke but if the purpose of a system is what it does, it's a pretty compelling joke! have you seen signal's financials? not only is their continued existence a thing that keeps phone numbers relevant, they bleed money to telecoms by paying for verification sms
oh and the telecoms trying to make money off verification sms is entirely reasonable considering that without it, the entire “phone number as identifier” ecosystem would be freeloading. the market works :)
