my fediverse thread from 2024-01-16 where i was far too excited about the new yamaha seqtrak got deleted in the server accident so here i'm gonna quote it from twitter so i can reply to it
must avoid gear acquisition syndrome but the yamaha seqtrak looks actually good and i am not afraid to say it
this is not even why it was tempting me but apparently it might be fully controllable via midi sysex??? is the dream of the 1980's still alive???? yamaha wtf i love you

it's like a certain teenage engineering product if it were cheaper, larger, and had better build quality, a non-masochistic and comprehensible physical layout, support for normal computers, and a realistic chance of still being usable in 10 years' time

oh god oh no i stared at the midi data tables for the seqtrak and it might be a fully editable awm2 synth???? like, you can apparently edit the eight "elements" comprising a voice using sysex, and the sampler track is just awm2 so you could make entirely custom sounds????????
it seems like the seven drum tracks are also awm2! i think it's only the built-in sequencer that limits them to drum-like monophonic use; it might be possible to use them as normal synth tracks via an external device? not sure if it'll be possible to use normal presets however
this editability is not available via the panel controls or the official app though. someone will have to make a third-party editor for it. hmmmmmm 👀

every yamaha product is just another box for the same awm2 synth engine. montage? awm2. seqtrak? awm2. every xg product? those were awm2 of course. reface cp? awm2. psr? awm2. beginner keyboard for children? awm2. digital piano? awm2. disklavier? this, too, is awm2.
how much control you get over the synth engine varies between products though. lower-end ones are basically preset boxes. the seqtrak is exciting because it's a (relatively) cheaper product and yet it might be fully controllable if someone would write the software for it.
@hikari The real question is whether any Yamaha motorcycles also include awm2?🤔​
