jump to expanded postonly by watching this video did i find out that united states has been actively sabotaging the world trade organisation ever since the us decided to do protectionism again (against china) and found out that free trade cuts both ways
the problem with the "rules-based international order" is of course that the actors making the rules tend to pick ones they think will benefit them, and then if they don't end up suiting their purposes will ultimately throw a fit. but that's how politics always is.
holy shit
Tempted to call this attempt at blockading China from importing drugs the "Copium Wars"

anyway you gotta admit that the united states sabotaging the world trade organisation is pretty funny. it's a fun hypocrisy to talk about. it's not like the extremely depressing one that's extremely in the news right now and that i actively try to avoid thinking about.
anyway to spare you from having to watch the video: https://www.reuters.com/business/no-solution-wto-appeals-court-crisis-foreseen-documents-show-2024-02-14/
basically the us has been continuously blocking judicial appointments to the wto's appelate court for half a decade now, effectively paralysing its dispute settlement system :)
this kind of just, sucks, right? like if the us is tired of free trade (a legitimate position!) they should just leave the wto. wrecking it for everyone else, on the other hand, is dishonorable. but democracies are kind of just like this i guess. no leadership means no honour
@hikari same, I watched it yesterday, and I did not anticipate where it was going
