i got addicted to twitter again and i am Regretting it. there's all this panic about how social media is bad for kids or whatever, but i think more specifically algorithmic timelines are bad for everyone and should probably be limited in some way

i used to avoid the algorithmic timeline religiously but the newer version of the app makes it as difficult as possible to avoid it, and makes it hard to keep up with your regular timeline, and so eventually the fatigue sets in and i gave up

i don't necessarily think algorithmic curation is fundamentally bad but the whole system is designed to try to hook you for as long as possible; if you're spending literal hours scrolling twitter or tiktok or youtube shorts or whatever, then the system is succeeding at its goals

and the whole thing is deliberately hostile to user control. i actually think the algorithmic timeline is kind of useful when it gives me a little sprinkling of extra things i wouldn't have seen. but they don't want me to use it a little. they want it to consume me!

in the best case algorithmic time addiction is just a thief of your time and energy, but it can be a lot worse if you're not as… chill… as me? since they try to feed you with things that'll engage you, it's like a machine that invents guys for you to get mad at

and i have the self-preserving instinct to not respond! i get to close to responding sometimes, but i've almost always chosen Not to respond. this is for the simple reason that if my main contribution to humanity is arguing about programming languages, i want to kill myself

so the worst the algorithmic timeline does for me personally is waste my time, because i have a healthy information immune system or something.

on the other hand… there's all sorts of people out there who actually Get Mad At the endless stream of guys to get mad at

and that just rots your brain. i worry about those people. it would happen also without the algorithmic timeline but the algorithms make it worse. i think it's a big contributor to online discourse being So Fucking Bad Man

anyway in conclusion

1. can someone tell idk the european union to like impose strict limits on algorithmic feeds
2. please help me i just want to use the nice app where my friends are and see a handful of interesting posts sometimes but now i am trapped in elon's hamsterwheel
