jump to expanded postok i have decided that the demolition of the palast der republik is my personal 9/11. they could have saved her, should have saved her, had to save her
(i'm at an exhibition about the palast rn)
the most offensive thing is of course what it was replaced with but it shouldn't have been destroyed
the joking 9/11 comparison is kind of appropriate actually. (eric adams voice) the world trade center is the palast der republik of america!
how to make your newly-reunited countrymen really feel at home in the country dominated by the rich kids from the other side: demolish the cool place full of art, cinemas, theatres, disco, sports places etc they hung out in as teenagers and replace it with a fake imperial castle
(hearing about such experiences from people who had lived in the DDR is one of the big things that has reinforced my belief that it shouldn't have been destroyed. btw, a tragic thing about history is that since it closed in 1990, basically only easterners had such memories!)
