jump to expanded postif i let the gear acquisition syndrome win, what do i buy
“hikari why are you comparing turn-of-the-century synth modules to a 2024 groovebox” did you know the yamaha seqtrak is also a relatively affordable way of getting a huge collection of high-quality sounds? and it's portable. not sure if it's a fair comparison though :p
this thing is a beast
cool shit about the JV-1010:
- small (half-rack unit)
- black 😎
- JV-1080, JV-2080 and SR-JV80-09 sounds built-in
the JV series:
- is heard all over 90's electronic music, iconic
- fully editable, not just preset boxes
- isn't good at GM, it's an afterthought!
honestly the fact you can get these for under €200 used is a steal
General MIDI is really not what the JV-1010 is made for, but DOOM sounds glorious on it
god i need to get more storage space and a good camera so i can film and upload lots of videos of midi devices. the reason i do it so infrequently rn is i don't have the necessary equipment to make it convenient, my current process is really annoying
on that note, is there a good little camera i could get for filming stuff relatively up-close, that's easily mountable, and that can just stream its output over usb (so i don't need to get an sd card for it) for like… idk, under €200 used?
oh no. the JV-1010 is a fully-editable synth with a huge amount of depth, and… i have just made my first little edits to one of the built-in patches, producing a radically different sound. i am definitely going to fall into the synth sound design rabbit hole. it's my calling
this thing is gonna consume me. the power of editing… i like the on-board pianos but they don't quite hit the spot. i want something housey. well, i can just make something housey! or if i really have to i can also spend €€€ on an expansion card with even more sounds
holy shit i can't even begin to explain how incredible the variety of built-in patches on the JV-1010 is. these are fucking incredible. i am veritably feasting. there is enough Quality and Novelty in just one of these categories to kill a child who's only heard general midi
it is unbelievable to me that these things can sell for as low as €150 on the used market???? i know there must be lots of great synths out there but goddamn this thing does so much
anyway i might stream myself playing around with the patches after work. this is just too fun
