jump to expanded postRoland are discontinuing “Sound Canvas VA” on September 1 😢
https://rolandcloud.com/news/Sound-Canvas-VA-is-being-discontinued
you should buy a lifetime license for this VST while you still can, I guess. it's $69.
the announcement implies they might eventually replace it with something else, I hope that's true
SCVA is an accurate software emulation of the Roland SC-8820, one of the last Sound Canvas models. the most powerful was the SC-8850, but for some reason that model has never been re-released or incorporated into a later product. the SC-8820 is somewhat cut-down version of it.
it's still a beast though. 1600 melodic instruments, 63 drumkits, 64 insert effects, and it has different “maps” that let you use varyingly faithful versions of sounds from previous Sound Canvas modules, from the SC-55 to the SC-88 Pro. it even has the SC-55's MT-32 bank
i promise the Sound Canvas series, SCVA included, can do a lot more than just General MIDI DOS game soundtracks! those never made full use of the SC-55, let alone later models. check out some of the songs in this album for instance https://youtube.com/watch?v=wO3KEwceJTs
(technically this is self-promo because one of the songs there is by me but it's not the “some” i meant haha)
i am a well-known hater of Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. that software doesn't deserve to bear the GS name.
SCVA more than deserves it, on the other hand. if you're interested in one of the fullest expressions of the 90's home computer music production dream, please check it out
@hikari I’ve got an SC-88Pro and my dad’s had a JV-1010 forever and the 90s dream is alive
the Roland sound bank VSTs are god tier, and I love playing with the 909 VST’s pattern programming buttons
@luigithirty i got a JV-1010 recently! it's full of fantastic sounds and can do so much, i fear i'll never master it
