i read a piece about how the rohingya genocide happened: in a country where suddenly everyone has facebook on their phones, whereas just a year or two ago nobody had internet at all, people have no exposure to the idea that stuff online can be fake. and they fell for photoshops
we're about to find out what happens when boomers everywhere drown in ai slop they don't have the necessary literacy to recognise. sure, gen z can tell, but we're the lucky ones.
(to be clear, i'm not implying the outcome will be genocide, this was hardly myanmar's only problem)
the piece i read was this: https://erinkissane.com/meta-in-myanmar-part-ii-the-crisis
i recommend reading the whole series from start to finish, but i must warn you, it's incredibly sobering reading. it really will make you question your liberal values if you have any empathy at all. and be aghast at facebook
okay since this is slowly blowing up over on twitter i want to be clear i am not saying people believing photoshops caused genocide, i just think that was an interesting feature of that chaotic information environment, and that environment also produced a genocide, which maybe should worry us.
