as much as i love my collection of MIDI modules, this all started for me with the Yamaha PSR keyboard i got two years ago, and i will never not stan the Yamaha PSR series. they are mass produced and cheap on the used market. are they sexy? no. are they good? yes!

‪okay this is a weird niche hobby but if you want to make music in MIDI format like it's 1995 they're still pretty good devices for that, at least the ones made since the late 90's. they have a large and versatile library of sounds and they have bread and butter effects.‬

most of them don't have full Yamaha XG support, which is a shame, but they still tend to have all the important stuff:

like:

  • basic XG sound set
  • filter and envelope controls
  • as many drum parts as you want
  • effect controls, often with extra stuff like distortion
