suddenly wondering how the hell analog delay effects work. i know from computing that they used to be something called “delay lines” for memory. i wonder if…
yup, same technology! also used for PAL colour televisions (it's called PAL because of the phase alternating line, there's some error-correction trick where it delays the previous line and they cancel or something)

thanks to kind friends and followers i have found out about the “bucket-brigade delay” which is fascinating because it is basically an integrated circuit filled with tiny capacitors and so it has discrete-time samples, like something digital, but it's still analog
i wonder now if those tiny analog audio recording chips that used to be used in toys, operate via the same principle. i can't think of any other way they could work and be that cheap, so i assume it must be.
