jump to expanded postmaaaan how much of what i think of as βmodernβ in the sound of a particular style of music is just the clarity of the piano tones
you ever realise that something that defines the sound of something to you might actually just be a result of previously existing recording technology limitations
@hikari I dunno, it's weird. I had an experience in class the other week where the lecturer was going through the recording of Black Hole Sun, and part of it was the limitations of recording to tape. (Specifically, the backing vocals and lead guitar are on the same track because the tape couldn't handle the number of tracks they wanted.)
And somehow I was surprised it was recorded to tape because I still consider that a relatively modern song, even though it's 30 years old at this point.
@Catriona gotta remember that while people with money had digital tech in 1994, there must have been plenty of broke people and kids and what have you that still didn't
@hikari It's ironic because that was true in 1994, but just a few years later one of the significant drivers in moving to digital was that tape was really, really expensive. Things changed so fast in the digital world.
