incredibly google translate in 2024 cannot handle such a simple piece of swedish where i wrote something the way it would be spoken, but with entirely correct spelling and punctuation
@hikari does swedish also have a huge difference between the spoken and written registers of the language?
google is _incredibly_ bad at e.g. written vernacular cantonese (although they've apparently recently improved it)
@r not a particularly dramatic one. cantonese is an unusually bad one, most languages aren't… like that
@r i'd be very curious what it's like with arabic varieties
@hikari oshi, totally forgot about that, seeing that we're not from that cultural background
@hikari one notable difference is that the different varieties don't have their own unique letters! which Cantonese does!
@r yeah i'm just mentioning it because it has a similar thing going on to chinese, though possibly worse, it's maybe more comparable to the pre-modern situation where classical chinese was the written standard
@hikari is it _that_ bad, or is it more comparable to e.g. regional varieties of German or even English?
@r don't know
