jump to expanded postwtf youtube only gives 130kbps of audio bitrate? i guess with aac or opus that's like maybe pretty okay but stiiiilll
@hikari opus is pretty good at 130k, Maybe transparent in many cases to me at least
@hikari I mean... Honestly I think the fact that you didn't notice before now would suggest that it is indeed maybe pretty okay.
@hikari aren't the general recommendations for (stereo, 48000Hz) opus that 32-64Kbps is listenable, 64-96Kbps is reasonably high quality, and 128Kbps is perceptually transparent? see https://wiki.xiph.org/Opus_Recommended_Settings and https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Opus
@leo @hikari they definitely overstate the "listenable" end of the spectrum - 64Kbps is pretty attrocious - but yeah, for most things 128Kbps Opus is reasonably close to transparent, especially once YouTube's extra normalisation and such are applied. if you side-by-side it versus an original lossless copy you can pick up some artifacts in more challenging areas, but unless you're really listening for it you won't generally notice at that bitrate.
@gsuberland @hikari hmm via the extremely scientific methodology of "pick a song i like, reencode the flac with ffmpeg, and listen to it" 64Kbps opus is a clear difference side-by-side but i might not be able to immediately tell in casual listening
@gsuberland @hikari oh, yeah, subjectively i've always found metal to need higher bitrates than other stuff
@gsuberland @hikari 32Kbps is pretty terrible but not unlistenable, 48Kbps is borderline (artifacts are minor but immediately obvious). impressively it doesn't start to sound muffled until below 16Kbps (though there's really bad artifacting. i would not actually want to listen to 16Kbps music for any length of time)
@leo @hikari the setting and mode of listening also makes a big difference. just pottering about with background music on speakers, I probably wouldn't notice very quickly for most electronic music. but as soon as it's a primary focus, especially on headphones, it's very noticeable to me even up at 96Kbps.
the problem I generally run into is that once I notice a single artifact, I notice all of them, which leaves me distracted by the artifacts instead of enjoying the tunes.
