jump to expanded posti watched a film called “summer wars” which is about uh the meaning of family or something (it's one of those japanese films, you already know how it ends) and also about ntt's wet dream of i-mode taking over the world. i feel rather conflicted about being unable to like it. eh
it has some nice moments but they should've replaced the entire cyber world thing with like an irl hanafuda tournament or something
like one half of the movie is this kinda generic but nonetheless heartwarming kinda thing about the big japanese family being brought together by crisis and the idyllic countryside life and the other half is the cyber war envisioned by people who don't really care about cyber :/
@hikari This (weird cyber war wrapped in another plot) is a film that Hosoda keeps remaking; his first attempt was actually Digimon: The Movie, and the most recent (from what I hear, I haven’t got around to watching it) is Belle.
@hikari check out Belle, which is basically "hosoda returned to the conceptual conceit of Summer Wars over a decade later, but executed on it dramatically better"
@hikari it's wild how similar the opening sequences of the two films are, but also how different: summer wars feels the need to explain the concept in much greater detail, while belle focuses almost entirely on the song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPTfdO5hQUw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1W61zetQ1c
@hikari belle does a much better job of having its virtual world feel like an allegory for the social internet, and its central conflicts are much more relatable, which helps a lot
