jump to expanded post“admiral” in english is a doublet of “emir”, they're both ultimately from arabic أمير (prince, commander)
the d there doesn't belong, real languages like swedish drop it (”amiral” is the swedish word for admiral)
@hikari does 'admire' come from the same cognate?
@mazunki it doesn't, but it probably influenced the spelling of admiral
