a guitar and like… a multi-fx pedal? can those do amp simulation alongside all the other things or do i need like a Third Thing also (i am going to try to avoid buying an actual amp for as long as i can get away with it)

@hikari So there are four levels of signal - mic, instrument, line, and amplified high gain (I totally spaced on the name of it).

To get from instrument level to line level you need a preamp - if the multifx unit has a line out, it'll have a preamp on board (though I'm not familiar enough with multifx units to know how likely that is) - but whether you need anything else depends on where it's going from there. Powered speakers have an amp on board, so you can send a line-level signal to them, but unpowered speakers or headphones don't, so they'll need an extra signal boost from something.
