jump to expanded postman there's something about the fretboard, there's just something about it, there's some kind of magic to it i struggle to express. even as i struggle, quite literally painfully, to make complex chords on it, the fact it just Unlocks my intuitive sense of harmony is, aaaa, i love
it understands me! i understand it! i can't find the words because it's something outside the intellect. i am vibrating with excitement for this thing
i feel unshackled from diatony and yet paradoxically i know i will become better at diatony become of the fretboard. believe me on this
i think i am in love with the fretboard because i have an instinctive desire to transpose things along a scale with semitone increments. i fret a single string and play it and, without even really thinking about it, i am shifting up and down to play a familiar melody…
…and then i fret another string, and now it is a primitive chord, and i replay the melody, but now it is a chord progression, and then i add a third string, and now it is a chord progression where all the thirds have the same colour, but wait, that one chord doesn't fit…
…and so i just move that finger up or down one relative to the other fingers on that one chord, and now it is a chord progression with two colours of chord, and i can do all this with orders of magnitude less conscious thought than was required to try to express this in tweets…
‪man i suddenly feel a longing to try to play jazz on guitar. i must try this. the tiny amount of it i have managed to learn intellectually on keyboard effortlessly translates onto guitar, but there's a whole universe i know only intuitively and can't key; maybe i can fret it…‬
‪at this point this is still just a naïve dream but i really hope guitar might become the second instrument i can play intuitively by ear (the first being my voice). i think i dread notation and the keyboard a bit at this point. let's see how far i can get with just my hearing‬
(and my seemingly absolute-ish memory of pitches)
@hikari guitar is a very natural instrument for jazz for sure
@hikari especially if you focus on playing 3rd and 7ths
