something we just found out about recently is the non-sinitic substratum that probably exists in Yue language (incl. Cantonese)

啱 "correct" and 焫 "to burn" are likely of non-sinitic origin

it's also not in standard mandarin, making it *more* obscure

@hikari there's also this one, which was obviously a loanword, but we feel it really does convey "some indescribable part of the HK/wider-canto-sphere attitude"

@hikari i also appreciate how 缶 is a loanword with a kanji that looks like it could have come from a pictogram for a can
