aaah man i cannot tell you what is wrong or why but these IEMs like the output of my ~professional~ usb audio interface (the kind made for musicians, not for audiophiles) whereas they sound noticeably worse on every device i have that has a 3.5mm output :(

maybe i'll get apple's usb-c headphone adapter and see if it is actually “good” like people claim. i will decide it is bad if it fails this test. i'm sure it's actually my fault for buying earphones intended for professional use or something…

a few hours in the wonderfully foggy cold and dark and 125 SEK (~10,88 EUR) later, i am now somehow in possession of a genuine apple ”usb-c till 3,5mm hörlursuttagsadapter” (as reported by macOS — amazingly it's in swedish!)

and i am happy to report it gets on with these IEMs!!!

is this the cheapest and best value-for-money apple product?! what's truly bizarre is that this apple 3.5mm adapter provides better audio quality than the 3.5mm output on my laptop which is made by checks notes apple

i can't yet tell you if the apple “usb-c to headphone jack adapter” is quite as good as my audio interface's output is, but what i can tell you is it doesn't have the high-frequency hiss problem and i haven't yet noticed a lacking bass problem. so i am quite happy
