jump to expanded postwhy does nobody make smartphones that are normal-sized anymore, i was considering getting the fairphone 5 which is a fairly standard-sized phone as it's coincidentally exactly the same size as my gf's phone, but i tried holding it in my hand and i viscerally HATE how BIG hers is
maybe i have relatively smaller hands but they're not THAT small do you all just live with being unable to reach the top of the screen with your thumb
i thought i was just assuming the worst, i didn't realise just how physically intolerable things would be
for context i was really unhappy when i had to replace my iphone se 1st gen (same form factor as the iphone 5/5s) with an iphone 7; i've learned to live with it buuut :(
if apple still made a phone with exact design of the original iphone se 1st gen i'd probably forget my convictions and just buy it anyway. they peaked there. everything about the physical design of the iphone se 2nd gen is a worsening to me
oh my god am i losing my mind do they really not make modern android phones with screen sizes smaller than 6 inches outside of japan
THEY DO BUT THEY WERE HIDDEN BECAUSE I WAS SEARCHING FOR PHONES THAT HAVE EXPANDABLE STORAGE AND THE ONLY NORMAL-SIZED PHONES ARE FLAGSHIPS THAT WANT TO EXTORT YOU FOR UNNECESSARY SOLDERED-ON STORAGE UPGRADES
i think we need to end industrial civilisation it's run its course
※ they do not actually sell modern smartphones with screen sizes smaller than 6 inches outside of japan even if you are willing to accept flagship phone extortion. the flagships are like, 6.3 inches. that's just, significantly closer to acceptable
the “sony xperia 10 vi” is… my only option?
its 21:9 screen makes it taller than my iphone se 2nd-gen, but no wider. sold in 🇪🇺, slab with flat sides (🩵), plastic rear (not slippy! not fragile!), android 14, 5g, microsd slot, 3.5mm jack(!), nice cameras, 8gb ram, ~€375… whoa
sony smartphones are basically an endangered species, and yet … what the fuck it's perfect. i'm going to just buy it. bless you sony i hope you can keep making these
can't believe apple rereleased the iphone 5c but now it's taller, has usb-c, expandable storage, runs android, and is branded “sony xperia” for some reason
@scathach see upthread!
@scathach (click the link to view on my instance if necessary idk)
@hikari I have the 5 III and am *generally* happy with it. It's the same width of an XPeria X Compact. It's unreasonably tall, which is nice when i'm reading books but terrible when I'm trying to, you know, touch the screen. It's the best I can get, it seems.
The screen corners are rounded rather than rectangular and it makes me *extremely* angry
@mcc it seems like these are very nearly the same phone in many respects https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=13002&idPhone2=10851
the tallness will surely be a bit annoying, but i guess it'd be even worse if it were wider
@hikari yeah in the end the most important thing is you can fit your hand around it to hold it
@erincandescent @mcc you love to see it
@hikari tell me, do they still sell phones with keyboards in Japan?
@hikari wait they do? what are they? even without expandable storage i'm curious
@cas i used 5g network support as my criteria for “modern”, but it's similar if you filter by a new android version instead
@hikari yeah, you can just get [reads again] oh, you said outside of japan. never mind
@hikari need
@hikari@social.noyu.me yeah we all just live with that. at least i do
@hikari regrettably, yes
idly reminds me again of how phone OSes developed features to scale or shift down the screen to make it easier to reach things...
@hikari Yeah, it's not as bad on Android because the back button is at the bottom. Mine is 6.5" and it only falls out of my hand some of the time lol :(
@hikari Yes! I've got a seven years old Sony XPeria and it's about 2/3 of the size of all my friends' phones.
I am dreading the time I will inevitably need a new one and there are no small ones left.
How do people get those giant slabs of phone-bread into their back pockets?
@hikari I had an iPhone 12 mini and traded it in for a 13 mini because it was obvious they weren’t going to do a 14 mini. It’s still good and you can still get them second hand. And Apple will still replace the battery. O]i expect to keep it another 3 years or so…
@erincandescent @hikari “small screen” alone can reduce your range to maybe 30 phones if you’re lucky
one really fun thing to do is go on gsmarena and search for phones with 4g/5g connectivity with a max width of 70mm, then cry at the state of the smartphone market
@scathach iphone se 1st gen was apple's greatest ever phone, everything since is compromised
