this is the only reason i care about higher bit depth than 16-bit for listening btw. you do NOT need more than this for distribution but for SOME fucking reason every piece of software playing back lossy audio produces unbearable quantisation noise if the output is 16-bit?!
i am NOT talking about the quality of the audio file. they're all standard mp3s or aacs or whatever, i don't know if these formats even have a notional bit depth. i'm talking about how if the system audio output is set to anything lower than 24-bit bit depth there's obvious noise
has nobody heard of dithering or what
the problem is specific to devices which do not have an analogue volume control, which is to say most of them
