this is the best i've managed to get the Yamaha QY70's guitar preset + ampsim to sound when playing with a MIDI guitar. in fleeting moments it almost sounds like an electric guitar, perhaps even something approaching nice.
recording this was absolute hell, never doing this again
(the recording being hell was a product of me simply not having the Serious Video Content Creator setup needed for me to record two things at once, one of which is horribly particular about lighting, in this particular room, in some semblance of privacy, in comfort. and yet)
at this point i'm fairly convinced that what holds it back is just how hard it is for a ROMpler preset to sound anything like a guitar. the ampsim effect might sound okay if its input was an actual guitar sound
distortion is brutal at the best of times with how sensitive it is to subtleties of the input and General MIDI presets can't really do subtle
