analogue video standards are beautiful because basically every stage in the normal TV decoding circuitry became its own input/output standard over the years:

RF
-> Composite (plus audio L+R)
-> Y/Luma + Chroma (together: S-Video)
-> Y + Cb + Cr (together: Component)
-> R + G + B

like if you've stared at the back of an early 2000's or late 1990's TV that had All The Things then you know all of these input formats. what you might not know is that basically every colour TV ever made has the ability to decode all of them if you could just add the ports!

an audio analogy might be that many of the extra outputs and inputs you find on more advanced guitar amplifiers (effect send/post-preamp output, effect return/post-preamp input, external speaker output…) are things that even the simplest amp could have added with a hardware mod
