forgive me a little politicking: so this is big i think, israel has gone so far that every major western industrial power other than the us and germany — yes, all of them — have finally told them to fucking stop the war already
once again germany refuses to criticise israel, and when asked about it, i realised something horrible about the history that led to this point: when germany decided in 1952 to let israel be the official beneficiary of its holocaust guilt, israel was a much weaker "lesser evil"
this was long before israel's wars of conquest and mass settlement projects
now, it was not before the nakba of course. but in the years immediately after world war ii, every major european power had their hands dirty in continental-scale mass population transfer projects!
and of course in 1952 the holocaust was a very, very fresh memory for germany, and the west germans couldn't let the east germans look more denazified.
i guess what i'm saying is that horrible things start with "reasonable lesser evil" that you then double down on over decades
