jump to expanded postoh god we have the abusive relationship-type trauma triggered by people who are unwilling to admit fault, tolerate disagreement or recognise nuance
the weird “field of sunflowers” thread we once wrote must have been right at some level, our brain probably has been protecting us from fully remembering the times when we used to surround ourselves with people like that
the most important attribute of all our close friends is they are interested in truth and relatively zen, and… we probably are disinterested in romance in part because crushing on someone tends to mean we make ourselves very vulnerable to being like… intellectually submissive?
this probably makes us sound like we're rationalists, but we are not and never have been, and we think they're wrong about many things; we are similarly open-minded however
Ah, I'm realising that we struggle to tolerate reactionaries, even the leftist kind. We have always had more tolerance for the leftist type than the right-wing type, for many reasons you can probably imagine, but they're still reactionary at the end of the day…
Closely related for us is the fandom cop / moral-OCD-relating-to-art mindset, partly due to the folks we used to hang out with. Turns out the two works of art we find most meaningful and influential — Monogatari and SubaHibi — are impossible to tolerate in that mindset.
In Kanbaru's telling of it, a big part of why we were forced to exit that mindset is because of the Monogatari series and our attachment to her in particular, and she's not wrong. And as for me, Yuki, well… the work I'm from, SubaHibi, is something we'd never have read otherwise
