all things in the world have their positives, even the worst evil
thinking about how things that are similar to "drugs" (addictive, alter your thinking pattern, quite bad for you if used excessively, make you in one way or another less rational than you should be) can be very good for you in the right context
like i think you could make an evolutionary argument that the capacity for humans to suddenly lose their mind is there for a good reason, because even if it may come at immense cost, it will in some circumstances lead to things in the long run getting better rather than worse
and broadly speaking, if you look at a long enough time horizon, more or less every horrible thing you can think of can be a good thing in this way. that doesn't mean the good is in proportion to the evil, or the evil is justified by the good. but pure negative does not exist
@hikari the rationalists have proposed this as well, "why is it that random stuff that people use to get high seem to be more effective than all the pharma psych med research?"
