a decade and a half of emoji in unicode, and yet still, nothing can ever replace :3
:3 is worth a thousand emoji
the google emoji kitchen is pretty neat though. look at this cat smiling sweetly from under the box it's going to trap you in. how could you resist
@hikari what does :3 mean? I only know of :p, :(, :) and afew more
@esoteric_programmer it's hard to explain, but the shape of the number 3 contrasted with the colon forming the eyes makes it look something like a cat's face, so it has a sort of mischievous feeling
@esoteric_programmer this association with cats gives a certain cuteness, and the difficulty of explaining the emotion it conveys gives it a certain uniqueness, and these things combined mean it has stuck around while emoji have replaced many of the other smileys

@esoteric_programmer they're a lot like words, and words are rich with lore, if you want to call it that. we are very interested in etymology
