jump to expanded postthe march of progress is so exciting. today we will be installing a uhh. lighting tube. with an electronic uhhhhhh. “glow switch starter”? lysrör + glimtändare. but they aren't fluorescent… they're LED now… last time we replaced them, they were fluorescent…
WARNING: THIS LUMINAIRE HAS BEEN MODIFIED
actually I don't like that included sticker because it implies the ballast has been modified to bypass the glimtändare, but it hasn't (is that another way to install it?), so I'll probably remove it lest some future person actually take it at face value
i just think it's very cool that a lighting fixture designed for fluorescent can accept LED tubes, a newer and radically different lighting technology, because if there is a market for standardised user-serviceable parts, someone will find a way to engineer a drop-in replacement
fluorescent lights already went through a technology transition when the starter changed from a glass tube with ionised gas to some kind of solid-state electronic module
similarly you can actually get solid-state electronic modules as drop-in replacements for vacuum tubes, though i assume it will be a cold day in hell before guitar people use those
@hikari Yes, but... The old Edison lamp base is a safety crime, but I'm sad to see the ability to swap in your choice of bulb going away. In exchange for bulb choice and repairability we're getting really neat forms that would never work with the original 'bulb' concept, though.
It's a trade-off. 🤷
@mdwyer you can still swap in your choice of bulb! normal light sockets aren't going anywhere to my knowledge
@hikari big portal vibes
