one of the most frequently used keys on our MacBook (12-inch, 2017) has come loose… I guess ordering a new laptop earlier this month was good timing, though it hasn't arrived yet

it refuses to stay put, and this might be due to damage to the keycap or the hinge…

it turns out there are companies that will sell you individual replacement keycaps (for like $10 each if you're only ordering one at a time), a service I can appreciate in this circumstance; let's see if replacing the keycap fixes it…

actually, I know it's due to damage to the keycap and to the hinge, but the thing is that the damage is in different, non-matching places. with a new keycap this keyboard's life can be extended for a little longer…

today an unassuming envelope from poland arrived in our mailbox. it contained a single keycap — and to our surprise, also the entire butterfly mechanism. we don't know how to replace the latter so we just swapped the keycap for now. works great. thank you Klawiszedolaptopa.pl

oh, the key is very slightly taller than the surrounding keys and doesn't feel quite the same to type on. that's unfortunate. maybe in this particular case they are in fact selling a replica and not a key pulled from a broken laptop… maybe we should've just gone to aliexpress…
