decided to install AbiWord just to try it out (on Debian; it's basically Linux-only these days alas) and just look at this. this is pure and soulful. i'd so much rather use this than LibreOffice next time i gotta write a Serious Letter

The toolbars have a very small set of colourful, distinctive icons. The first toolbar has New, Open and Save; Print and Print Preview; Undo and Redo; Cut, Copy, Paste and Past Formatting; Spellcheck; a zoom level drop-down; and Create A New Revision. The second toolbar has a styles dropdown, a font dropdown, a font size drop down; Bold, Italics and Underline; Left, Centre, Right and Justify; Numbered List and Bulleted List; Fill Colour and Text Colour. That's it! This is a lot less icons than your average word processor. You can see from the menu labels that it also supports tables and inserting things, so it's not that feature-bare. There's some delightful details in this thing. For example, the “Tools” menu actually offers several options that just open an external website. One is called “Wiki Encyclopedia” and the status bar explains it “Opens the libre Wiki on-line encyclopedia” (en.wikipedia.org)
