twitter's finally starting to fall apart in a way that makes it unusable for me and I'm feeling pretty sad about it

the website that defined the social environment of our 20's is on its last legs and there's no real replacement

a public square destroyed for one guy's ego and turned into a bad tiktok clone

I'm bitter about it, of course I am

it's been getting worse and worse and worse these last few years, but now threads on locked (meaning non-public, not suspended) accounts are broken. and locked accounts were one of the few remaining unique advantages of the site. importantly, an advantage for being social

x dot com is no longer a website for meaningful public discourse, nor a website for keeping up with your friends, nor a way to meet new people any more. it is meant to be an endless feed of lowest-common-denominator slop. to be human there is to fight a constant uphill battle

and there are still people on x dot com who are worth talking to, there are still things it offers that nowhere else does, but slowly but surely every last spark of meaning in the place is being snuffed out. it's incredibly depressing

maybe if bluesky would have 1) the ability to block your posts from showing up for the obnoxious morons who read the fucking Discover feed and 2) private accounts, maybe then there would be somewhere reasonable to go, but both seem like they just won't happen any time soon

and frankly bluesky just has all sorts of architectural weirdness

then there's of course the fediverse, but it has its own architectural problems. it's hard to convince interesting people who aren't sysadmins to join if the first demand is pledging allegiance to a warring state
