since i’ve been doing twitch streams a bunch lately, the really bad noise floor of my current mic has been bothering me
if i want a better microphone for streaming and don’t want to spend more than about 100€, what should i buy?
i don’t necessarily care if it’s 3.5mm, XLR or USB, but since i do not have an XLR setup, the cost of that would need to be included
what I ended up buying:
• Razer Seiren Mini (629 SEK at MediaMarkt)
• generic desk-mounted microphone stand (219 SEK from Kjell och Company, article number 24034)
total cost 848 SEK (~77 EUR at current prices)
I’m pretty happy with the results! the recording quality is decent and it sounds like me. I need to get some kind of additional vibration isolation though if I’m gonna be doing a lot of mouse and keyboard usage while streaming.

@hikari Exchange rates are just the prices of currencies
@hikari I just mount my microphone on another desk, that turns out to be a very effective way to isolate it from vibrations on my computer desk :p
(It’s also just the most convenient place for me to mount the boom, that might be the real reason)
@demize yeah that would be the pro strat, alas I have just one desk. hmm…
@hikari look at it this way, you could probably buy a used desk and still come out under what I spent on just my mic arm
@hikari (I use the Heil PL 2T, which costs… $115 USD. It goes nicely with my Heil PRSM shock mount and my Heil PR 30 microphone, at least)
@hikari I like my Blue Snowball. It won't perfectly remove background noise, but it does very well for a USB mic.
@hikari I have a classical Shure and I like it very much. Had to connect it to a capturing device to sound good
@hikari I bought a Samson Q2U for about £75 (≈85eur) on the recommendation of Corey Quinn and have been super happy with it. The noise floor is pleasingly low.
@hikari the Elgato Wave seems to be very very good for a USB mic, though I’m not sure how much it actually costs
(there’s also an XLR version, don’t buy that one without an interface :p)
@hikari SM48 with cheap XLR->USB cable if you want versatile and high-end; any random 3.5mm lav mic if you want minimum cost but still surprisingly decent
@hikari these are my budget recs because you'll never regret owning either of them
the uber-cheap XLR->USB cables sometimes give 1kHz noise depending on your power situation; could probably get a cable + low-end interface while still being just within budget
