jump to expanded posta tiny comment on politics: i have been de-politics-ing my twitter/fediverse/etc feeds for a while ago. i only have maybe five or less accounts i follow who aren't muted who still retweet stuff about a certain current, extremely contentious ongoing conflict
*for a while now.
and so i only get the tiniest sliver of insight into that particular conflict, and even those tiny bits would be enough to deeply radicalise you if you aren't able to control when you feel empathy… it's… i don't even have the words
i think social media might be deeply bad for the soul if you don't very carefully control how you use it. i don't see videos or photos. i don't see 99.999% of the content out there. i see the occasional screenshot of a few sentences in a journalistic article and it's, Bad.
it's a tuesday, the second day of the week, and i barely read social media yesterday so it may as well have been the first. i've already read my four paragraphs that can't be forgotten and haunt the soul forever for this week. i can't imagine reading four hundred or thousand.
it's no wonder that this radicalises people. radicalisation is a coping strategy. if you can't handle all the horrors of the world, it helps to believe that they are inevitable when fighting Evil Itself.
i'm not going anywhere with this. i'm not trying to make a political point; i have my own very strong opinions on the matter but i won't say them here. i just… wanted to reflect on the emotions involved.
thanks for listening.
clarifications:
- i say “politics” but it might have been clearer if i said “the state of the world”, specifically topics that are extremely politically charged and involve human suffering
- i can't actually control feeling empathy, obviously, that was a bad way to put it
@SoniEx2 are you aware of current global armed conflicts
@hikari yes, unfortunately.
they've never been actually inevitable?
sure, doing something about them *now* is... difficult. and there's no way to undo the damage. but we feel like there's always hope.
@SoniEx2 i don't disagree but i'm not really trying to argue about this
@hikari i think of those two choices i prefer radicalization
@whitequark i say “control when you feel empathy” but i actually can't really control it, i wouldn't have felt the need to write this if i could… maybe i shouldn't have written that
@hikari I (mostly) can and, well, I don't think of it as such a good thing
in and of itself it is a weapon!
@hikari if covid is politics then you lost the plot.
now, "this software is made with love by a queer trans person"... that's politics. can't believe you wouldn't put that in your emulator.
@SoniEx2 covid is also politics in a certain sense. literally everything can be political so i'm not going to play the game of “certain things should be above politics”. if people screaming about a certain subject is getting to me i will mute them
