drowning in that wonderful fake-fm fake-electric-piano sound
ok i am still extremely bad at playing the keyboard but with something like two hours of practice i did eventually manage to play the first twelve bars of that song you were hoping for without any wrong notes
ahhh the magic of practice. i spent all that time yesterday getting the chords/melody/hand movements right, but it was a real struggle to get a full recording without mistakes in it and my timing was awful. one night of sleep later, now it's easy!
just learned about this fucked up thing called the metronome button, it makes timing practice significantly easier,
that's not a shitpost, that's probably the reason i've never gotten very far with two-handed things until now 😭
the first 12 bars of dire dire docks are a really good thing to try to learn as a beginner keyboardist huh. the left- and right-hand parts have to be combined for it to sound right, so you can't escape using both hands, but the rhythm is syncopated so it's tricky to read and play
it has some hand movement so you have to get comfortable with that. it's a very familiar and much-beloved song so it's compelling to learn and you will notice your mistakes. but it is also very simple as piano pieces go and easy to remember, once you have grasped it…
this is the sheet music i have been using (https://web.archive.org/web/20100816183214/http://www.freewebs.com/heliumkidd/superMario64/direDireDocks.pdf)
it's an exercise in reading rhythm. there's a few different note and rest durations, and i have to know about beams, ties and dotted notes, which makes me appreciate the way the notes are aligned between staves
learning stuff is a lot more fun when it has some complexity to it
we live in such a beautifully intricate world
progress! this is where i am as of today, it only took me a few attempts to get a complete run without mistakes like this, and i think i have better luck when not recording (less stressed)
(speedrunner voice) real, no segments!
it would probably sound better if i played this with the sustain pedal but it's more fun this way
oops the A-B-D-G right-hand part actually is meant to change for the last two chords, to A-B♭-D-G and then A-C-D-G. i somehow missed both of these when reading the sheet music! thanks to some folks in a discord i'm in for pointing this out
