jump to expanded postyou ever think about how video game cartridges aren't strictly ROMs any more. flash is cheaper than mask ROMs and has been for a long time. those carts are gonna die someday
apparently 3DS game cards' flash storage have an auto-repair (βrefreshβ) functionality built-in that may be able to fix broken cards if they haven't been out of use for too long, see: https://gbatemp.net/threads/corrupted-cartridge-fixer-release.628539/
@hikari@social.noyu.me yes and i am worried about my sealed Celeste cartridge
@hikari I hadn't actually known this, though it makes sense economically. We really need some kind of copyright reform, to ensure the preservation of digital media.
@hikari
Data loss in flash based game "ROMs" is an actual problem that's being addressed by weird community hacks... https://gbatemp.net/threads/corrupted-cartridge-fixer-release.628539/
@hikari I actually think about this every day.
Same applies to nearly every piece of electronics. Capacitors just die. :(
Sell it before it breaks!
@tekhedd capacitors can be easily replaced at least!
@hikari Well that's true, and the biggest ones are the ones that are usually overstressed and fail first...but those little ones eventually die too. Some days I'm amazed that anything works at all. :)
