wait… in order for deterrence to work, early detection of nuclear strikes is necessary, which means… sending an ICBM towards another country with a conventional payload on it could, by itself, trigger nuclear armageddon?

it can just be a dummy load. intercontinental ballistic paperweight and it’ll still trigger the early warning systems won’t it
@hikari I believe this argument is one reason why many people considered the "Cold War" to be a bad thing
@hikari@social.noyu.me yup, for instance, if the USA detected something following the ballistic profile of an SS-27 being launched at our territory, it could trigger our fleet of Minuteman IIIs and similar weapons to be launched in retaliation
