jump to expanded postwhoa. an ipad charger and a cheap usb-a-to-usb-c cable designed for a low-power phone can actually charge my laptop… i love owning the lowest power envelope real computer apple ever made
4.5w tdp! 1.2ghz base frequency! passively cooled! and… intel, not apple silicon. i cherish it
it is still my main computer. it is the machine i developed touchHLE on. this is not an act of masochism it is a genuinely great computer. it's also probably the last mac i will ever buy
heh it's actually supplying just enough power (10w) that it's alternating between powering and charging the laptop. interesting. i wonder if it only “charges” it when total system power consumption stays within 11w, and stops when it spikes
@hikari Is this the one they just called the MacBook? I had a run of Very Small Computers and would have liked it if they kept that line going
@rf yes, it is, and i can only wish they made one with an M1 in it, because it feels like the chip this thing was built for
@hikari yeah! Real computer speeds at TDPs lower than the Air's! The M-something iPads show it would work they just won't build one :(
@hikari is it one of the 12 inch MacBooks?? they always looked cute
@qdoit yes! i have the 2017 i5 512gb model and was fortunate enough to get it discounted from amazon in like… 2019? i think it must have been shortly after they were discontinued
@hikari I have my doubts they’ll make another one, but the “MacBook” is one of the most amazing machines I’ve ever held.
There’s a utility to the MBP that the MacBook would never match, and that’s fine.
I wonder if they could bring it back using the pro iPhone SoC?
@hikari this sounds like you have a grudge against the M1
@eater the M1 macbook air is significantly thicker and heavier
