jump to expanded posttime to blitz through a rewatch of oshi no ko s1 (excluding the first episode), might tweet if something is interesting
oh right this is actually a good show in its own way
we have a tendency to take our own previous enthusiasm about particular series with a pinch of salt when we know we enjoyed them in a sort of social in-for-the-ride way or when the subject matter feels cynical or trashy; all that applies here, but it has things going for it still
(episode 3) it's cool seeing the animation direction and voice acting attempt to portray “bad acting”
do you ever wonder if anyone within the show's world can actually see the stars in the hoshino kids' eyes
gonna resume our oshi no ko s1 rewatch
it's strange saying this about a pretty new anime (it aired in 2023), but after getting used to the new social media reality of the latter half of the 2020's, and after seeing newer shows (NinKoro, NGO), the fact this show is based on a 2020 manga is jumping out at me, I guess
Twitter and YouTube are important… that already feels less modern than it did when we first watched it, which was only two years ago! I know Twitter hasn't died yet in Japan, but still. And this is a pre-Shorts YouTube (those launched late 2020)…
Oh, right, TikTok is mentioned in the show, so why are we reacting so strongly? Maybe it's that it's still situated in a very real-feeling world where the Internet is a promotional avenue, rather than the Internet being this inescapable thing that has swallowed the entire world…
Kurokawa Akane is a girl you don't quickly forget
we've now rewatched S1E2~S1E7… I think we like Oshi no Ko most when it is a cynical drama about the entertainment industry. the other aspects of it are… well, they can be a fun time, but they aren't anything more than that really, and that's why we have such conflicted feelings
idol anime are always interesting in how they choose to the realities of that world and how cynical a view they take on it. Oshi no Ko is in a very unusual place there because of the story's supernatural elements which drive the main plot…
it's both a drama about how the entertainment industry works and a shounen revenge fantasy involving the son of god avenging the death of the father. it talks a lot about how the entertainment industry is ruthless, but also the virgin mary was a capital-i Idol and this Matters
I guess at the end of the day it is deeply otaku media (derogatory)
