we have a tendency to take our own previous enthusiasm about particular series with a pinch of salt when we know we enjoyed them in a sort of social in-for-the-ride way or when the subject matter feels cynical or trashy; all that applies here, but it has things going for it still

it's strange saying this about a pretty new anime (it aired in 2023), but after getting used to the new social media reality of the latter half of the 2020's, and after seeing newer shows (NinKoro, NGO), the fact this show is based on a 2020 manga is jumping out at me, I guess

Oh, right, TikTok is mentioned in the show, so why are we reacting so strongly? Maybe it's that it's still situated in a very real-feeling world where the Internet is a promotional avenue, rather than the Internet being this inescapable thing that has swallowed the entire world…

we've now rewatched S1E2~S1E7… I think we like Oshi no Ko most when it is a cynical drama about the entertainment industry. the other aspects of it are… well, they can be a fun time, but they aren't anything more than that really, and that's why we have such conflicted feelings

it's both a drama about how the entertainment industry works and a shounen revenge fantasy involving the son of god avenging the death of the father. it talks a lot about how the entertainment industry is ruthless, but also the virgin mary was a capital-i Idol and this Matters
