today i'm gonna buy some fuckin huge microsd card and completely free myself from sorry about space for taking photos and videos and finally enable my berlin photo girl arc
also i'm gonna watch megalopolis probably because it seems like it's 9/11'ing everyone who i think is cool
βͺdid you know you can buy the shittiest ass android phone ever and yet in a space smaller than a sim card you can just drop 1tb of storage. absolutely unbelievable. we live in a time where personal flash storage is almost post-scarcity. don't buy things with unexpandable storageβ¬
this is a makin' happy - crystal waters morning
y'all i just bought 256GB of storage for β¬19 in a physical store. that's more than twice as much as my main phone has and half as much as my laptop. and i had to ask the person at the checkout several times whether that was really the correct price π
βͺi would've bought 512GB if they had it but i was already expecting a sticker shock because i just assumed the price at checkout would be twice as much. i. godβ¬
this is actually breaking my brain 256GB for β¬19 is so cheap it would not even feel like an βindulgenceβ to me even when i don't have an income. 256GB is like three times the size of my music library. forβ¦ what, two trips to mcdonald's? it's unfathomable
IN A PHYSICAL STORE IN A MALL. i wasn't even hunting around for bargains online. this is the most expensive way to buy. and i didn't even have to look for the cheap options they try to hide away, these were the main options.
i am the proverbial victorian child rn i'm not joking
βͺslipping tiny microsd card into your pocket like it's samizdat this tiny flake contains enough propaganda films to kill the soviet union ten times overβ¬
honk if u like easily accessible lockable sim card and microsd card trays located beneath a user-replaceable battery~
βͺ253 GB freeβ¦ a free space number with so many digits it would normally cause panic. i'm free. my life can begin againβ¬
@hikari honk
@hikari honk ![]()
@hikari what does that image say? but also, awesome! we need more of that stuff
@hikari the only issue with that is that that's flash memory. That has issues of its own, particularly files getting corrupted and disappearing, otherwise, awesome purchase!
@hikari just use usb c drives smh
@hikari yes, it costs more to get some of the highest-performance storage on the market than it does to get low-speed low-endurance storage of a similar size
@rcombs i am aware of the fact that that this is ssd storage yes. which obviously justifies the pricing corresponding 2017's retail nvme ssd prices
@hikari as far as I can tell, if you want a microSD slot, a good IP rating, and a high-end CPU on a current-gen phone, your choices are... basically two Sony models and that's it?
meanwhile, if I was going to use a massive amount of on-device storage, there's a decent chance it'd be to shoot high-quality video, where I'd want a high-end camera (further limiting options) and very fast write speeds (which can easily outpace even the fastest microSD cards)

how is the market this bad this can't be real

i feel like at some point you gotta move stuff off the device's internal storage though, and you'd have an easier time if you can just move it to a microSD card or something inside the phone
@hikari USB3's faster though (and you can shoot directly to it at whatever speed you need)
@hikari ...and yet, for reasons I struggle to comprehend, Google is killing off microsd storage. The feature is missing on pretty much all of the top of the line phones, and becoming more and more difficult to use in software.
Some of their security and performance reasons have some validity, but I still desire the feature! Especially when MTP is a hellish nightmare to use, especially for larger collections.
All the reasons to avoid Apple phones are now arriving on Android phones. π
@saagar yes that was entirely the problem
