jump to expanded posttime to rewatch/catch up with the entire monogatari series
it is peak but it does begin with a panty-shot and only gets worse from there. for better or worse
everyone feels slightly off-model in bake
who drew all these friends so dear to me so strangely incorrectly
ARE GA DENEBU ARUTAIRU BEEGA
senjougahara hitagi one of the oomfs of all time
it has been nine years since i last saw hitagi crab (excepting the time a few months back where i tried to show someone the first episode)
bakemonogatari episode 2 is quite something
snail time
oh, so that particular iconic autistic off-model hitagi is from bake ep3
i mean of course this one, though this is not by any means her most iconic pose from this episode, there are too many
i love the almost hypnotic soundtrack of bakemonogatari, it makes it a lot easier to get lost in the series
just learned about this shit from bakemonogatari ep4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1seg thank you fire sisters
hey you know whose arc is up next? that's right
(but i must attend to other things for the time being)
she's...
wait she DOES actually say "yuri" i'm goi ng to die
the distorted electric guitar that is the cry of the heart in this scene...
oh hey it's the most legendarily moe anime opening of all time (sen~no!)
it's been too long since i saw this, i had forgotten just how much character stuff happens inside other characters' arcs, not least of which for kanbaru and araragi's friendship and araragi and senjougahara's relationship
kanbaru suruga saved my life
bakemonogatari walked so hanamonogatari could run
If we're trying to ground this in "reality," then I'd say it's a kind of multiple personality disorder.
whoa it's that episode my friend made an amv of up next
honestly if you go into monogatari with your irony-brain switched off and your barriers down it's really not that perverted of a show, but you really have to be able to put yourself in the character's shoes rather than being like Be Consumed Of Media And Get Opinion Of Thing
i keep being surprised at how Little happens in it relative to how i remembered it, and that's because what's changed is my relationship to the work and to media in general, the emphasis in my memories was all the work of a more squeamish past self in denial about liking the show
bakemonogatari episode 12 is something special
my life an anime (bakemonogatari)
the shaftworld is real i actually just wander around talking to people against atmospheric sky backdrops. my friends can confirm this
i'm kind of like hanekawa tsubasa
finished rewatching bakemonogatari
monogatari's still the greatest to ever do it and bake is a masterpiece
wish i could give post less superficial commentary but that's twitter as a medium for you, that's why i don't do play-by-plays any more
deeply meaningful, beautiful work
okay, next up is something new (to me): kizumonogatari. i've never watched this before! time to finally watch it. excited
i watched the first (of three) kizumonogatari, holy shit this rocks
hard to overstate how much of a tonal shift it is if all you've seen is the tv anime
what an experience
i'm not even going to post pictures, i took exactly one screenshot during watching it and did not feel the urge to take more, it's better that way!
something surreal really in finally seeing the story of what happened with araragi koyomi and kiss-shot acerola-orion heart-under-blade and hanekawa tsubasa during golden week, the murky outlines of which have been in the background of my mind for a decade, in such visceral form
i can't really recommend taking such absurdly long breaks between watching things to anyone else, but these things really do hit different when you watch them... like this
i think the most shocking thing about kizumonogatari coming from the other monogatari series adaptations is how egoless it is, and that's what makes it really hit you
kizu 2 time
a thing that keeps taking me out of the experience a little is that the frame pacing is fucked whenever there's a panning shot or similar. i am surely used to what 24fps on a 60Hz monitor looks like by now, so i'm suspecting something's gone wrong elsewhere, oh well
finally the monogatari baseball episode!!!
kiss-shot is so oomfie
some of kiss-shot and araragi's screams and whimpers and so on so far have been frightfully realistic, the VAs did an incredible job because they force me to confront the suffering whether i like it or not
i finished the jazz one. i guess, after another break, i'll get to the final one
time for the third and final kizumonogatari
kiss-shot, i'm so sorry
araragi koyomi is going to be an important character to me, huh
next up, time to rewatch nisemonogatari. excited to see my old friend kaiki deishuu again
they were selling love. at the convenience store. for 298 yen
ใ้ฟ่ฏใ ๆจๅ ่ผฉใใใใฏ็ใใใใดใใใใชใใ่ ใฃใฆใฏใใฆใๅฟ ่ฆใช็ฉใ ใใ
i'm two episodes into rewatching nisemonogatari and so far it really is the monogatari season where nothing happens
but it's also just in an awkward place for me because it's sort of the one i'm most familiar with, or to put it better, overfamiliar with
"you'd make a great wife, araragi-senpai" - kanbaru suruga
despite her disaster status kanbaru is remarkably perceptive about many things that fly over araragi's head
one of the beautiful things about japanese is that there are many, many ways a particular name you've heard might be spelled, so people have to explain the spelling with reference to compound nouns, and the particular choice of compounds says a lot about their personality
judging by how many times this has happened so far in bakemonogatari and nisemonogatari when someone introduces themselves, i think nisioisin particularly enjoys writing these. his character names are delightful. kanbaru suruga and kaiki deishuu's are personal favourites
i think calling kaiki deishuu a villain would not be unfair, but he's such an interesting one because he exists on neutral ground, he's not cartoonishly evil, he's a very mundane evil and the show lets him explain himself
completely unrelated thought: i'm still reeling from just how much, well, seeing kizumonogatari changes how bakemonogatari and nisemonogatari feel. i almost wonder if my "ideal watch order" would have someone watch bakemonogatari twice, but that seems... fanciful
ARARAGI DOES A FAKEOUT IN THE NARRATION???
i'm six episodes in and apparently Karen Bee isn't over yet, wow
kaiki is a dreadful character, and i mean that as praise. nobody who goes in too confident in themselves survives contact with his, to most people he encounters, alien value system
if you know me it probably won't shock you that i agree with kaiki deishuu's musings about smartphones at the end of nisemonogatari episode 7
platinum time
seeing the way araragi koyomi treats his younger sisters can make me squirm a bit because it's too familiar
ๅๆ้ใ ("awl") is such a cool word. literally "[tool that] stabs through one thousand pages". thank you araragi tsukihi for saying this cool word
kagenui is a name i have not heard in a long time
ๅใฏใญใก้กใงใใ่จใฃใ
the scene where araragi koyomi spits out his coffee...
nisioisin likes cutting off characters' hair so much that he gives multiple characters the supernatural trait of hair that grows far too quickly
phew, i've finally rewatched nisemonogatari
rewatching that was fairly tedious for me. i expect that once i'm done with (re)watching the whole series it'll still be the low point of it for me. but it's still good to have done it... better than it existing to me as pure osmosis
it's really making me regret my screenshot-hoarding habit, if you have looked over screenshots of things you've seen, rather than actually rewatching them, even if unintentionally, it distorts your memory
apparently i finished watching nisemonogatari the first time sometime in 2016, the same year that i saw bakemonogatari. it was then a long, long time until i seriously picked up the series again. perhaps nisemonogatari was responsible for me losing interest for so long. tragic
time to blast through nekomonogatari kuro again. how long has it been, uhh checks eight years? i am too old
you know i think my nuclear take might be that the sex scenes in subahibi are a lot more contextually palatable than araragi's constant antics in monogatari but they'd crucify me for saying that
wait was the scene where araragi finds out hanekawa's wound on her face is from her father hitting her adapted twice?? this definitely came up in kizu and now it's in neko kuro, but maybe the former was a flashback, but i don't feel like it was...
shinobu donut time :)
shinobu age regression... wouldn't you if you were a sulky smol half-vampire
i'm really impressed with araragi's on-the-spot completely adlibbed bullshit strategy to get the fire sisters to not go out hunting for the monster cat at night
hmm, so there's a distinction between ไบบๆ ผ and ๆงๆ ผ huh
HIS CLOTHING TELEPORTS WHEN REGENERATING TOO???
i finished rewatching nekomonogatari kuro. bake -> kizu -> nise -> neko kuro is a kind of disorienting watch order but chronological order would be weird so
resuming the monogatari re-watch/catch-up thing.
we recently rewatched koimonogatari on a whim: https://social.noyu.me/@hikari/statuses/01K3R5RC653A9XZZ3V534R3ZST
i think we'll rewatch neko shiro, lest we leave nekomonogatari unfinished and then skip straight to hana, because i (kanbaru) really need to rewatch it tbh
in these last two months i have also rewatched suruga monkey again at least twice. in a sense that's why i need to rewatch hana, otherwise i'm stuck in the past etc. i rewatched because i'm kanbaru. if it wasn't obvious, the koimonogatari rewatch was for senjougahara-senpai.
may as well link this little thread about a funny moment from suruga monkey too, i think it was a good thread: https://social.noyu.me/@hikari/statuses/01K53XH33P13BMZ7W6HJ38STT1
ah, nekomonogatari shiro begins with hanekawa talking about her not conceptualising her own name as belonging to her; how she's not a god to be put on a pedestal; how she's โcat, tiger, and only humanโ; and then: โNow, the time has come to awaken from this nightmare.โ
โฆfamiliar

โit wouldn't do for the sleeping beauty to just lie there waiting for her prince's kissโ
oh goddamnit they're gonna kill us
โWell, I was just wondering if you were expecting Araragi-kun to help you without you having to ask.โ
oh man, we've been missing this highschool
senjougahara and hanekawa are a little bitโฆ you knowโฆ
(i do remark upon this at some point to araragi and he's totally oblivious, somehow)
the way senjougahara acts towards hanekawa in the first episode of nekomonogatari shiro is far more romantic than even the most manic kanbaru suruga's daydreaming could ever be
jesus christ i had completely forgotten the
โdon't get the wrong idea, i'm not like kanbaru. [rot13]nyy v jnag vf gb frr lbh anxrqโ
should i feel honoured or insulted? senjougahara-senpai, what did you mean by thisโฆ
god there's a whole bit in nekomonogatari shiro episode 2 where the tiger tells black hanekawa (cat) that โoddities' [ๆช็ฐ] characteristics are not something that can be suppressed. the people who see us reap what they sow. your master saw me. nothing else mattersโ
โฆyea
โi have already begun.โ
this scene from nekomonogatari shiro episode 2, where senjougahara figures out hanekawa has no taste in a broad sense, is very necessary watching.
โDon't you think having things you hate is just as important as having things you like?โ
good lord, the scene at the start of the following episode, where senjougahara explains that hanekawa is different from araragi in that she acts as if she doesn't even realise being goodhearted is dangerous, is even worse. โyou're too white[hearted]โ.
oh right the OP is called ใchocolate insomniaใ. it's funny because we're resuming the rewatch right now to help us sleep. our brain has been too nerded-out and it's bad because we're presently ill and we'll drive ourselves mad with strange thinking loops like this.
this is in fact exactly what meeting me irl is like
that particular clip happens to be a particularly good way to demonstrate how bsky's video uploads sound godawful because it compresses the dynamic range to hell: https://bsky.app/profile/hikari.noyu.me/post/3lz36qdxn522i
senjougahara-senpai in the most un-subtle manner possible successfully baiting karen-chan into doing exactly what she wants is hilarious
this little clip from Nekomonogatari Shiro ep3 is one of the most plural things we've ever seen. we do not just mean the obvious Black (cat) Hanekawa thing. the entire sequence, including the way Shinobu shows up
[Nekomonogatari Shiro episode 4]
Araragi's mom: [~โdon't get used to staying here OK, we can't be your familyโ]
Hanekawa: Sorry I made you worry. But my family circumstances aren't as complicated as you think. There's just a little discord right now. That's all.
Araragi's mom:
The entire Araragi family is Just Like That, huh.
Gaen Izuko is terrifying.
Of course the Tiger uses ใใใฏใ as its first person pronoun. Of course. Is this another reference to that Natsume Souseki book.
The ending of Nekomonogatari (Shiro) is an incredibly moving thing.
i guess we'll rewatch Kabukimonogatari
i feel somehow obligated to post a clip of most of the opening scene of Kabukimonogatari, where Ougi discusses the meaning of stop lights with Araragi, as a metaphor for how people aren't sufficiently cynical about the world
why is oshibo shibobu so blasรฉ about time travel
the MTBB full-season batch of monogatari is good in many ways but man we do not like some of these translation choices. i think a lot of it is commie's fault. like come on you can't turn โshota koyomiโ into โlittle koyomiโ you're removing the flavour in what shinobu actually said
we do respect in theory the concept of trying to avoid sounding like a weeb when translating, but the problem with that is that the monogatari series is fundamentally otaku media, the characters constantly make otaku culture references, they should sound like weebs you know!
also we prefer โaberrationโ as a translation of ๆช็ฐ [kaii] over โoddityโ, but we are really nitpicking here, the translation is overall very very good, you know
